How Propofol Wears Off So Fast
Propofol works fast in both directions. Injected into a vein, it reaches the brain in the time blood takes to travel from arm to brain, and sleep usually follows within 40 seconds. It dissolves easily in fat, so it crosses into the brain quickly, and as the level in the blood falls, it moves back out. After a single dose, the level in the blood drops fast. About half of that drop comes from the drug spreading into other tissues, the rest from the body clearing it, mainly in the liver. That is why a patient usually wakes within 8 to 10 minutes of an induction dose.

How big is the pendant, and how does it sit?
The pendant measures 22 mm (about 0.9 inch), slightly smaller than a 2-euro coin (25.75 mm) or a US quarter (24.26 mm). It sits around the collarbone on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) sterling silver chain with a lobster clasp and a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. Extra chains of 40, 42, 45 or 50 cm with extender, or 80 cm, are sold on this page. It is solid 925 sterling silver with a high-polish finish, nickel-free and hypoallergenic.
Is there a gold version, or a combined piece?

What did propofol replace?
Mostly thiopental (thiopentone in the UK). In early 1934, John Lundy at the Mayo Clinic began clinical tests of this new barbiturate from Abbott Laboratories, and from the late 1930s it was a popular way to start anaesthesia. Its drawback showed with repeated doses: the effect built up and left a long hangover. In John Glen’s animal tests at ICI, propofol did not. Patients woke with a clear head, which helped day surgery grow: a colonoscopy, say, and home the same day. Today thiopental has largely given way to propofol.
