tRNA necklace | sterling silver

The adapter molecule that bridges the genetic code and the protein — the molecular translator at the heart of every ribosome.

The Science of tRNA

Transfer RNA (tRNA) is 73-93 nucleotides long, folding into a cloverleaf secondary structure that adopts an L-shaped tertiary conformation. The anticodon loop, at one end of the L, base-pairs with mRNA codons in the ribosomal A site. The 3' CCA terminus, at the other end, is charged with a specific amino acid by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase enzymes — one synthetase for each of the 20 standard amino acids. This charging reaction is the critical step that links nucleotide sequence to amino acid identity, and the accuracy of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (error rate ~1 in 10,000) defines the fidelity of translation.

A Meaningful Gift for Science Lovers
