THC necklace | gold vermeil

This is the molecule that revealed an entire neurotransmitter system no one knew existed. Isolating its structure started the search for what it bound to in the brain. Finding the receptor took decades, and the discovery of the brain's own internal version followed shortly after.

The Science Behind THC

Raphael Mechoulam and Yechiel Gaoni isolated and determined the structure of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in 1964. Identification of the CB1 receptor by Lisa Matsuda's group followed in 1990, and the discovery of the brain's endogenous cannabinoid anandamide came in 1992 from work led by William Devane and Mechoulam. CB1 is now known as the most abundant G protein-coupled receptor in the brain, with CB2 expressed primarily on immune cells. Endocannabinoid signalling regulates synaptic plasticity, mood, pain modulation, appetite, and immune response. Therapeutic applications include chemotherapy-induced nausea, chronic pain, and several seizure disorders.

Worn By

For people who follow cannabinoid science as professionals or as informed outsiders.

  • neuropharmacologists and cannabinoid researchers
  • medicinal chemists working on receptor pharmacology
  • clinicians prescribing cannabinoid-based therapies
  • science journalists who cover the endocannabinoid system

Buyers split into two groups: lab-side researchers who recognise the structure on sight, and patients or advocates who wear it to mark a personal stake in the science.

FAQ

Will a cannabis researcher actually wear this?

If they have spent any time on cannabinoid pharmacology, the molecule reads like a colleague. We see it bought as a goodbye gift when someone leaves a cannabinoid lab, as a thesis-finishing present, and occasionally as a personal mark for clinicians who run cannabinoid trials.

What was so unexpected about the discovery of the cannabinoid receptor?

Until 1990, there was no known biological reason for the brain to respond to a plant compound. The CB1 receptor was the first hint that an entire endogenous signalling system had been hiding in plain sight. The discovery of anandamide two years later confirmed it. The brain makes its own cannabinoids.

What are the size, material, and chain specs?

45 mm pendant in 18K gold vermeil (sterling silver core, 2.5 micron gold plating), nickel-free. 45 cm gold vermeil chain with a 5 cm extender. Free DHL Express anywhere in the world, 1-5 business days, duties and taxes covered. 30-day “Love It or Return It” return policy.

How does the gold compare to the silver version?

Same molecule, same 45 mm size. Sterling silver core with 2.5 micron 18K gold plating versus solid 925 sterling silver. Pick by which finish the recipient already wears.
