Heartbeat necklace | sterling silver
Doctors, nurses and paramedics learn to read an ECG early in their training, and many use that skill for the rest of their careers. This heartbeat necklace in sterling silver is a gift for her first day, her graduation or a tough year of training, and for anyone who loves what a heartbeat stands for.
Who It's For
- a daughter who has made it through her first year of medical school
- a friend graduating as a nurse
- a paramedic, for Christmas
- a colleague in cardiology, intensive care or the emergency department
- a wife, a sister or a girlfriend who likes a piece with meaning behind it
- yourself, for a silver piece that gets noticed and starts conversations
Carolina W. bought it for a friend: “Gave this necklace to a friend to celebrate her graduation as a nurse. She loved it.” Maria L. bought one for herself: “It is so beautiful. Get tons of compliments on it.”
One Heartbeat, Twelve Views
The heartbeat line most people know is a single view of an electrical wave that crosses the heart with every beat. A standard 12-lead ECG records twelve. Ten electrodes go on the skin, four on the arms and legs and six across the chest, and the machine combines them into twelve leads, each watching the same wave from its own angle. Some leads face the front of the heart, others its side or its underside. That is how a clinician reading the twelve lines can often tell roughly where in the heart a problem sits.

FAQ
How big is it, and how does it sit?
The pendant is 36 mm wide (about 1.4 inches), roughly one and a half US quarters side by side, and smaller than the close-up photos may suggest. The chain attaches at both ends, so it lies across the chest just below the collarbone. It comes on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) sterling silver chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. Our sterling silver is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. It can darken over time, and the cleaning cloth that comes with it brings the shine back.
Is there a gold version, or a different chain length?
Yes. The same heartbeat necklace comes in 18K gold vermeil, also 36 mm. Choose the finish she already wears: the design and size are the same in both. The heartbeat line also comes as silver earring hoops (26 mm), silver studs (11 mm) and a silver ring. For another length, an extra chain in silver or gold vermeil is offered on this page in 40, 42, 45 or 50 cm, each with the 5 cm extender, or 80 cm without one.
Is delivery free, and what if it isn't right?
Yes. DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.
What does a bulldog have to do with the ECG?
In 1887 the physiologist Augustus Waller recorded the first human electrocardiogram, at St Mary's Hospital in London. To show his method, he later used his bulldog, Jimmie, who stood with his paws in jars of salt water wired to the recording instrument. After a demonstration at the Royal Society in May 1909, a member of Parliament asked in the House of Commons whether the demonstration broke the Cruelty to Animals Act. The Home Secretary, Herbert Gladstone, said it was painless: “If my hon. Friend has ever paddled in the sea, he will understand the sensation.”
