Heart section necklace | sterling silver
Everyone knows the heart from the outside. The people who listen to it, scan it and operate on it know the inside. This heart section necklace is for them: a cardiology resident, a sonographer, a cardiac nurse, the family doctor who has looked after you for years, or yourself.
Who It's For
- a cardiology resident finishing her rotation, or her fellowship
- a cardiac sonographer who looks inside hearts all day, for her birthday
- a cardiac or intensive care nurse leaving the ward, or retiring from it
- your family doctor, after years of looking after you
- a medical student who has just passed her anatomy exam
- yourself, after heart surgery of your own, or because you know what is inside
Melissa D. bought her own: “Excellent service, excellent postage, and incredible product.”
The Sound of Four Valves
Inside the heart, four valves keep blood moving one way: the tricuspid and mitral valves between the upper and lower chambers, the pulmonary and aortic valves where blood leaves for the lungs and the body. The familiar lub-dub is made as they close. The first sound is the mitral and tricuspid valves shutting as the ventricles squeeze. The second is the aortic and pulmonary valves closing as the ventricles relax. Thin cords called chordae tendineae, anchored to small muscles in the ventricle walls, hold the mitral and tricuspid leaflets together under pressure, so blood cannot flow back. Much of what a doctor hears through a stethoscope is the valves.

FAQ
How big is it, and how does it hang?
The pendant is 24 mm tall (about 0.9 inches), about the size of a US quarter and a little smaller than a 2-euro coin. It hangs from the top on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) sterling silver chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender, so the length adjusts from 45 to 50 cm and the heart sits at or just below the collarbone. Our 925 sterling silver is nickel-free and hypoallergenic.
Is there a gold version, or another heart?
Yes. The same heart section comes in 18K gold vermeil, also 24 mm, on a gold vermeil chain. Choose the finish she already wears: the design is the same in both. For the whole heart seen from the outside, there is the anatomical heart necklace, 20 mm, in both finishes. For a different length, an extra chain is offered on this page, from 40 to 80 cm.
Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?
DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It comes in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.
Who discovered that blood goes round the body?
William Harvey, physician to King James I, in a book published at Frankfurt in 1628. Medicine had largely followed Galen for well over a thousand years: blood was formed in the liver and used up by the body. Harvey worked out that more blood passes through the heart in half an hour than the whole body holds, so it could not be made fresh and had to go round. His teacher in Padua, Fabricius, had described valves in the veins. Harvey showed they let blood flow only towards the heart.
