Dopamine serotonin necklace H | sterling silver and 18K gold vermeil

This two-tone dopamine serotonin necklace gives each molecule its own metal: dopamine, tied to wanting and reward, in gold vermeil, and serotonin, tied to mood and sleep, in sterling silver. Give it to a partner, a daughter or a sister in medical school. It goes with the silver or the gold she already wears.

Who It's For

  • a partner who has had her eye on it for a while, for her birthday or Christmas
  • a daughter, for her birthday or a graduation in biochemistry, psychology or medicine
  • a sister or friend in medical school, when she passes her exams
  • a friend who mixes silver and gold, for her birthday
  • yourself, as a daily reminder of your field, or of your own story

Lilian L. gave it to her daughter: “My daughter’s birthday present and she loved it!” Camille S. bought the silver version for herself: “At first, I wasn’t sure it was going to work since it seemed like it wouldn’t lay right the way the two molecules are linked but I was wrong. It’s perfect and I’m glad I purchased it.”

How Dopamine and Serotonin Send a Signal

A neuron releases dopamine or serotonin, the molecules act on receptors on nearby cells, and transporter proteins then pull much of them back into the neuron to be reused or broken down. That return step is where many medicines act. SSRIs, the most prescribed antidepressants, block the serotonin transporter. Methylphenidate, used for ADHD, blocks the dopamine and noradrenaline transporters. Where they differ is on the receiving side. Dopamine has five receptor types. Serotonin has more than a dozen, in seven families, which is part of why one small molecule plays a role in mood, sleep, appetite, gut movement and blood clotting.

FAQ

How big is it, and what is it made of?

The pendant is 40 mm wide (about 1.6 inches), roughly one and a half times a 2-euro coin. Dopamine is 18K gold vermeil (2.5 microns of 18K gold over sterling silver), serotonin sterling silver, both nickel-free. It hangs from both ends and sits around the collarbone on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) sterling silver chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. Extra chains of 40, 42, 45 or 50 cm with extender, or 80 cm, silver or gold vermeil, can be added here. Take it off to swim or shower.

Two-tone, silver or gold: which should I choose?

The horizontal dopamine serotonin necklace comes in all sterling silver, all 18K gold vermeil, or this two-tone version, each 40 mm and hanging from both ends. The two-tone goes with both silver and gold jewelry, which helps when you are not sure which she wears. There is also a vertical version in silver or gold vermeil, the same 40 mm, hanging from a single point for a longer, narrower line. All five use the same two interlocked molecules. Only the metal and the way it hangs change.

How fast does it arrive, and can it be returned?

DHL Express delivers it free worldwide in 1-5 business days, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.

Where was serotonin first found?

It turned up in the gut first. In 1935 the Italian scientist Vittorio Erspamer found that an extract of the gut lining made smooth muscle contract, and by 1937 he had named the new amine enteramine. In 1948 a Cleveland Clinic team isolated a substance from blood serum that tightens blood vessels and called it serotonin. In 1952 Erspamer and the chemist Biagio Asero showed the two were one molecule. The name that stuck came from the blood, but most of the body’s serotonin is made in the gut.
