crossed DNA ring | sterling silver

Twenty-five years together is the silver anniversary, and a crossed DNA ring is one way to mark it for a wife or partner whose life runs on science. It works just as well for any other year you want to celebrate.

Who It's For

  • a daughter graduating in genetics or molecular biology
  • a friend who has just defended her PhD
  • a colleague leaving the lab, or a mentor retiring from it
  • a sister or friend who teaches biology
  • yourself, to mark a milestone of your own, like a first paper or a new post

Tatiana summed it up in two words: “Just beautiful!”

How DNA Gets Shuffled

Before an egg or a sperm cell is made, each chromosome pairs up with its partner, one copy inherited from the mother and one from the father, and the two swap matching stretches of DNA. Biologists call this crossing over, and it means each parent passes on a new mix of their own two parents' DNA. On average, the chromosomes in an egg carry about 41 of these swap points and those in a sperm cell about 26, so the DNA you got from your mother was shuffled more than your father's. Add the coin toss of which chromosome from each pair gets handed down, and brothers and sisters, apart from identical twins, end up with different combinations.

FAQ

Which size should I order?

It comes in US sizes 5, 6, 7, 8, 8.5 and 9, about EU 49 to 60. The surest way is to measure the inside of a ring she wears on the same finger and match it to a size chart. If she is between two sizes, write to us at support@sciencejewelry1824.shop before you order and we'll help you choose. If it doesn't fit, return it unworn within 30 days for a refund and order the right size. It is 925 sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic.

Is there a gold version, or matching earrings?

The crossed DNA ring comes in sterling silver only. For earrings to wear with it, the crossed DNA earring hoops come in sterling silver, which matches the ring's metal, and in gold vermeil. Each hoop measures 20 mm across and fastens with a post and ear nut. If she prefers a single slender band, the DNA ring comes in sterling silver and in 9K solid yellow gold.

Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?

DHL Express delivers free worldwide in 1-5 business days, and we cover the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box with a festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.

Who proved that chromosomes really swap pieces?

In 1931 at Cornell, graduate student Harriet Creighton and instructor Barbara McClintock showed it in maize. One chromosome 9 in their plants carried a knob at one end and an extra segment at the other. Plants grown from kernels whose genes had recombined carried chromosomes whose marked ends had swapped too. Thomas Hunt Morgan saw the early data and helped speed the paper into print. Curt Stern showed the same in fruit flies that year. McClintock later won the 1983 Nobel Prize for discovering mobile genetic elements.
