Why Psi Stands for Psychology
Psi is the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet and the first letter of psyche (ψυχή). In Homer, the psyche is the life that leaves a person at death and the shade that lives on. Later Greek writers used the word for the mind, and Aristotle used it for a butterfly. The word psychology is first recorded in the title of a Latin treatise by the Croatian humanist Marko Marulić, who died in 1524. The treatise is known only from a list of his works. The oldest surviving book with the word in its title is Rudolf Goclenius's Psychologia of 1590. The link between the letter and the word is why ψ became the symbol of psychology.

What does ψ mean in quantum physics?
It is the wave function. In 1926 Erwin Schrödinger published the equation that describes how ψ changes over time, but what ψ itself meant was still open. That same year Max Born used it to describe electrons scattering off atoms. In the main text of his short paper he tied the chance of each outcome to the amplitude of the scattered wave. A footnote corrected it: the probability is proportional to its square. That reading earned Born a share of the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics.
