Caffeine necklace | 18K gold vermeil

One customer who bought this caffeine necklace in gold vermeil for herself calls it one more reason to talk about coffee while she drinks it, because people will ask. It can start the same conversation for a friend whose day begins with an espresso, a sister who studies chemistry, or a partner who keeps the coffee machine busy.

Who It's For

  • a friend who calls herself a coffee addict, for her birthday or for Christmas
  • a sister or daughter studying chemistry, to get her through exam season
  • a colleague you share the morning coffee run with, as a thank-you when she moves on
  • your partner, if she wears gold and starts every day with a cup
  • yourself, if you wear gold and like a piece people ask about

Gemma C. gave the gold vermeil version as a gift: “Exactly as expected. Beautifully presented with super speedy delivery.” Mary D. gave the silver version to her daughter for her birthday: “She requested it, so we know she's going to be very happy.”

How Plants Came to Make Caffeine

Coffee, tea, cacao, guaraná and citrus all make caffeine, yet they did not inherit it from a shared ancestor. Caffeine production appears to have evolved at least five separate times in flowering plants. Coffee and tea both build it from xanthosine by adding three methyl groups in turn, but each uses a different family of enzymes. Cacao and guaraná start from xanthine instead. Citrus goes through theophylline, a molecule long thought to be only something caffeine breaks down into. Different plants reached the same molecule by different routes.

FAQ

How big is the pendant, and will the gold last?

The pendant measures 25 mm (about 1 inch), close to the size of a 2-euro coin. It hangs from a single loop below the collarbone on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) gold vermeil chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. Extra chains of 40, 42, 45 or 50 cm with extender, or 80 cm, are sold on this page. The finish is 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Wipe it with a soft cloth, store it dry and take it off before swimming.

Is there a silver version, or matching earrings?

Yes. The pendant also comes in sterling silver, at the same 25 mm. Choose the finish she already wears. The design is the same in both. To make a set, the caffeine earrings come in gold vermeil or silver, a 14 mm molecule on 17.5 mm hoops. There are also caffeine studs in silver (11 x 14 mm) and a caffeine ring in silver, US sizes 5 to 9.

Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?

It ships free worldwide with DHL Express and arrives in 1-5 business days. We pay the import duties and taxes, so there is nothing to pay on delivery. It comes in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.

What do caffeine and DNA have in common?

The same chemical family. In 1881 and 1882 the German chemist Emil Fischer published the formulae of uric acid, xanthine, caffeine and theobromine, the main stimulant in cocoa. He later named the parent structure they share purine, from the Latin purum uricum, pure uric acid. Adenine and guanine, two of the four bases in DNA, are purines too. Fischer received the 1902 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on sugar and purine syntheses.
