DNA bracelet | sterling silver

One mother gave her daughter DNA twice: once when she was born, and again as this DNA bracelet in silver. It's a quiet way to tell someone close what she means to you, worn on its own chain or added to a charm bracelet she already has.

Who It's For

  • a daughter, as a present from her mum
  • a close friend, for her birthday
  • a friend who works with DNA
  • someone who already wears a charm bracelet and wants a science charm on it
  • yourself, as a science charm to keep

Sonja W. gave it to a friend: “Wonderful and beautiful bracelet in really good quality. Working with DNA this was a perfect present for my friend.” Tiziana B. ordered it as a present: “It was my first time shopping on this site, they were super nice and helpful. The bracelet arrived in a beautiful package.”

The X Chromosome That Goes Quiet

In mammals, cells with two X chromosomes, one from each parent, keep only one of them fully working. Early in development, each cell of the embryo switches one X off at random, and every cell descended from it keeps the same choice. An RNA called XIST sets the silencing off: it is made by the X it shuts down and spreads across that chromosome. So a body with two X chromosomes grows as a patchwork, some patches reading the mother's X and others the father's. The switch is not complete. In humans, an estimated 15 to 30 per cent of the genes on the quiet X escape it.

FAQ

Which length should I choose, and how does the charm attach?

The bracelet comes in 17, 18 or 19 cm (6.7, 7.1 or 7.5 inches). Measure around her wrist and add 1.5 to 2 cm for a comfortable fit. Between two lengths, take the shorter one. The 20 mm (0.8 inch) charm, about the size of a US penny, hangs from a connector on a 3.8 mm sterling silver chain with a lobster clasp. The charm is also sold without the chain, on its connector, which is compatible with Pandora bracelets. It is 925 sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic.

Is there a gold DNA bracelet, or a matching necklace?

The DNA bracelet comes in sterling silver only. For a matching set in silver, the vertical DNA necklace has the same 20 mm DNA design on a 45 cm chain with a 5 cm extender, and the DNA earrings measure 20 mm each, not counting the hook. If she wears gold, both also come in 18K gold vermeil. The same silver chain and connector also carry our dopamine, serotonin, antibody, microscope and petri dish bracelets.

Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?

DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.

Why are tortoiseshell and calico cats almost always female?

Because the gene for orange or black fur sits on the X chromosome. A female with orange on one X and black on the other grows patches of both, each patch from cells that silenced the same X. Calicos add white from a separate gene. In 1961 Mary Lyon, a geneticist at the Medical Research Council unit at Harwell, England, proposed this explanation in Nature, working from mice with mottled coats, and pointed to the tortoiseshell cat's black and yellow pattern. The rare male calico usually carries an extra X.
