The Story Behind the Rod
In Greek myth, Asclepius was the son of Apollo, raised and taught medicine by the centaur Chiron. He became so skilled that he brought the dead back to life, and Zeus struck him down with a thunderbolt for it. His sanctuaries, the asklepieia, were places of healing, where the sick came to sleep and hoped to wake up cured. Non-venomous snakes lived in some of them, and one European species still carries his name: the Aesculapian snake. His symbol, a single snake around a plain staff, has stood for medicine since antiquity.
