Rod of Asclepius necklace | sterling silver and 18K gold vermeil

This rod of Asclepius necklace pairs two metals: the snake, the animal sacred to the Greek god of healing, in 18K gold vermeil, and the staff in sterling silver. Give it to a daughter or a friend who has just qualified as a doctor, nurse or paramedic. With both metals in one piece, it sits easily beside the jewelry she already owns.

Who It's For

  • a daughter, sister or granddaughter qualifying as a doctor or a nurse
  • a friend graduating from medical school
  • a paramedic or EMT who has just passed her exams
  • your own doctor, for a birthday or a thank-you
  • yourself, at the end of a hard year of training

Breanna J. gave the silver version to her sister: “I bought this gift as a present for my sister who finished nursing school. She loved the necklace and I was very happy with the customer service and ease of ordering!” Catherine R. wears the silver version herself: “Absolutely lovely necklace, delicate and pretty. I've already had lots of compliments while wearing this.”

The Snakes of Epidaurus

The most famous sanctuary of Asclepius stood at Epidaurus in Greece. The sick slept there overnight in a hall called the abaton, hoping to be cured in a dream. Stone tablets set up in the late 4th century BC record the cures the sanctuary claimed. In one, a man with a painful sore on his toe dozed off on a seat outside the abaton during the day, and a snake came out and healed the toe with its tongue. Non-venomous snakes were kept in sanctuaries of the god, and the snake became his sign, wound around the staff he carried.

FAQ

How big is it, and which parts are gold vermeil?

The pendant is 33 mm long (about 1.3 inches), roughly 1.3 times the width of a 2-euro coin. The snake is 18K gold vermeil (2.5 microns of 18K gold over sterling silver) and the staff is sterling silver, both nickel-free and hypoallergenic. It hangs from a single loop at the top on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) sterling silver chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender, so it can be worn at 45 or 50 cm. Take it off to swim or shower to keep the gold vermeil bright.

Two-tone, silver or gold vermeil: which should I choose?

The rod of Asclepius necklace comes in sterling silver, in 18K gold vermeil and in this two-tone version, all 33 mm on a single loop. Choose the finish the recipient already wears. The design is the same in all three, only the metal changes. If you are not sure whether she wears silver or gold, the two-tone goes with both. There is also a rod of Asclepius signet ring in sterling silver.

Will it arrive before the graduation, and what if it isn't right?

DHL Express delivers it free worldwide in 1-5 business days, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It comes in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.

How did Asclepius come to Rome?

With a snake, according to Roman writers. In the 290s BC, during a plague, Rome sent envoys to the sanctuary at Epidaurus to bring the god back. The story goes that a large snake boarded their ship, and that as it came up the Tiber it slipped off onto the island in the middle of the river. A temple to Aesculapius, as the Romans called him, was built on that spot. Tiber Island still has a hospital today, the Fatebenefratelli.
