From Goddess to Pharmacy Sign
Hygieia was the daughter of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, and was worshipped beside him as the goddess of health. Ancient statues often show her holding a shallow bowl, with a snake feeding from it or coiled around her arm. Much later, pharmacists took the image as their own. In 1796 the bowl and snake appeared on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. It is still one of the best-known signs of pharmacy, used by pharmacy bodies from Australia to France, where it is one of the two official emblems of pharmacy alongside the green cross.

It hangs from a single loop at the top on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) sterling silver chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender, so it can be worn at 45 or 50 cm.
