Neuron earrings | sterling silver

Neuron earrings let her wear her work without saying a word about it, whether she studies the brain, treats it or teaches it. Give them to a daughter at the start of her degree, or keep a pair for yourself.

Who It's For

  • a daughter studying neuroscience, psychology or medicine, for her birthday
  • a friend or colleague in neurology or neuroscience
  • a teacher who explains the brain to her students
  • someone who already wears the neuron necklace, to make a set
  • yourself, to wear to the lab, the clinic or the lecture hall

Joao S. gave them to his daughter: “Was a gift to my daughter and she loved it!” Carina J. bought her own: “Beautiful and scientifically correct!”

The Reach of a Single Neuron

A neuron is a single cell, yet it can reach a long way. The motor neurons that move your toes sit in the lower spinal cord and send one fibre, the axon, all the way to the foot, about a metre in a tall adult. The nervous system builds this wiring by making too many neurons first. In many parts of the developing nervous system, up to half of the neurons that form die off. For limb motor neurons like these, and for many other nerve cells in the body, survival depends on the axon reaching its target and receiving the survival signals the target releases.

FAQ

How big are they, and how do they fasten?

Each neuron measures 31 mm (about 1.2 inches), not counting the hook, noticeably longer than a 2-euro coin or a US quarter is wide. They hang from sterling silver leverback hooks, which clip closed behind the earlobe so they stay in place through the day. They are 925 sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. To keep them bright, store them dry in their box and wipe them with a soft cloth.

Are there gold neuron earrings, or a matching necklace?

Yes. Neuron earrings also come in 18K gold vermeil, 31 mm on gold vermeil leverback hooks. Choose the finish she already wears. For a set, the neuron necklace comes in sterling silver and in gold vermeil, with a 39 mm pendant.

Is delivery free, and what if they aren't right?

Yes. DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. They arrive in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If they aren't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies to unworn earrings.

Who discovered nerve growth factor?

Rita Levi-Montalcini, a doctor from Turin. When Mussolini's 1938 race laws barred Jews from academic careers, she built a laboratory in her bedroom, with scalpels made from sewing needles, and studied nerve growth in chick embryos. In 1947 she joined Viktor Hamburger at Washington University in St. Louis. There she showed that a mouse tumour released a substance that made nerves sprout. It became known as nerve growth factor, and Stanley Cohen isolated it. The two shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She lived to 103.
