Butenandt's Nobel Prize followed in 1939. The scarcity reflects the potency, since estradiol acts at picomolar concentrations. Every molecule of it begins as an androgen. Aromatase makes estradiol from testosterone by removing one methyl group and turning the A ring into a phenol. That phenolic ring is what sets the estrogens apart from every other steroid hormone, and what lets the molecule fit its receptor so tightly.
