Femur earrings | 18K gold vermeil
The femur takes the weight of every step you take, yet most people never give it a thought. Femur earrings are for the woman who does, in the lab, the clinic or the dissection room. They make a quietly witty gift, and an easy pair to wear every day.
Who It's For
- a physiotherapist or orthopaedic surgeon, for her birthday
- a medical student who has just passed her anatomy exam
- a daughter starting physiotherapy or sports science
- a friend who runs, dances or climbs and knows what her legs carry
- someone who already wears the femur necklace, to make a set
From reviews of the silver version, both bought as gifts. Matej G.: “Very pretty gift! Thanks!” Kirill D.: “Nice, extraordinary and extravagant earrings”.
The Anatomy of the Femur
The femur is the longest bone in the body, roughly a quarter of a person's height. Its shaft is a hollow tube of dense bone filled with marrow, a shape that resists bending almost as well as a solid rod while using far less bone. At the top, the neck angles into the hip socket at around 125 degrees. That angle lets the leg swing clear of the pelvis, and it puts the bone under real load. Measurements from people with sensor-fitted hip implants show the hip carrying about 2.4 times body weight with each step of ordinary walking.

FAQ
How big are they, and how do they fasten?
Each femur measures 24 mm (about 0.9 inches), not counting the hook, about as long as a US quarter is wide and just under the width of a 2-euro coin. They hang from gold vermeil leverback hooks, which clip closed behind the earlobe so they stay in place through the day. 18K gold vermeil means 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. To keep the gold bright, wipe them with a soft cloth and store them dry in their box.
Is there a silver pair, or a matching necklace?
Yes. Femur earrings also come in sterling silver, at the same 24 mm. Choose the finish she already wears: the design is the same in both. For a set, the femur necklace comes in sterling silver and in gold vermeil, with a larger 31 mm pendant, and there is a femur ring in sterling silver.
Is delivery free, and what if they aren't right?
Yes. DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. They arrive in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If they aren't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies to unworn earrings.
Can a femur tell how tall someone was?
Yes, to within a few centimetres. In 1948 the anatomist Mildred Trotter of Washington University in St. Louis spent 14 months in Hawaii helping the US Army identify servicemen killed in the Second World War. Using the war dead, whose heights were on their service records, together with skeletons from the Terry Collection, she and the statistician Goldine Gleser published formulas in 1952 that estimate height from the femur and other limb bones. Refined in 1958, their formulas are still used by forensic scientists today.
