Neuron earrings | 18K gold vermeil

Every thought depends on neurons signalling, one cell to the next. These gold vermeil neuron earrings are a gift for a daughter starting her neuroscience degree, a neurologist who already wears gold, a friend finishing her PhD on the brain, or yourself.

Who It's For

  • a daughter starting a degree in neuroscience or psychology, for her birthday
  • a neurologist or neuroscientist who wears gold every day
  • a lab manager or research nurse who loves her work
  • a mentor retiring from the lab, from the students she trained
  • someone who already has the gold neuron necklace, to make a set
  • yourself, as a pair you can wear to work and to dinner

From reviews of the silver pair: Alina U. gave them as a gift, “Embrace your brain power and don't be afraid to show it!” C. A. wears them: “Really lovely earrings & have had a lot of positive comments about them.”

Neurons Are Not Alone

For half a century, textbooks said the human brain holds about ten glial cells, its support cells, for every neuron. A newer method changed that. Researchers turn brain tissue into a fluid of free cell nuclei, stain them and count, an approach called the isotropic fractionator. It finds about one glial cell per neuron, or fewer, and a 2016 review showed that careful counts under the microscope had found roughly one to one all along. Glia still do essential work. Oligodendrocytes wrap axons in myelin, astrocytes support synapses and clear away spent chemical messengers, and microglia act as the brain's own immune cells.

FAQ

How big are they, and how do they fasten?

Each earring measures 31 mm (about 1.2 inches), not counting the hook, noticeably longer than a 2-euro coin or a US quarter is wide. They hang from 18K gold vermeil leverback hooks, which clip closed behind the earlobe so they stay in place through the day. Gold vermeil is 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. To keep the gold bright, store them dry and take them off before swimming.

Is there a silver pair, or a matching necklace?

Yes. The same neuron earrings come in sterling silver, also 31 mm, on sterling silver leverback hooks. Choose the finish she already wears: the design is the same in both. For a set, the neuron necklace comes in gold vermeil and in sterling silver, with a 39 mm pendant.

Is delivery free, and what if they aren't right?

Yes. DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. They arrive in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If they aren't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies to unworn earrings.

Why did neuroscience need a squid?

Because its giant axon is about half a millimetre across, wide enough to slide a fine electrode inside. In 1939, at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth, Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley did that and recorded a nerve impulse from inside a living fibre, among the first to do so. The voltage did not stop at zero, as theory predicted. It overshot. The war halted the work, but they published their model in 1952 and shared the 1963 Nobel Prize with John Eccles, honoured for his work on synapses.

Neuroscience

Dive into the intricacies of the human mind with our neuroscience-inspired jewelry collection. Each piece is a tactile ode to the neural networks that shape our thoughts, memories, and consciousness. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, our designs mirror the dendritic branches and synaptic connections that form the basis of mental activity. With these elegant pieces, wear the enigma of cognition close to your skin, offering a subtle yet profound exploration of what it means to be sentient.
