DNA earrings | sterling silver

Some people want their science on show. These DNA earrings are for the women who prefer it close and quiet: a small double helix at each ear. A gift for a wife in genetics or a daughter studying science, or a match for the DNA necklace she already wears.

Who It's For

  • a wife or partner who works in genetics or molecular biology
  • a daughter studying science, pharmacy or medicine
  • your mother, for her birthday
  • a colleague, when a card is not enough
  • someone who already wears a DNA necklace or ring
  • yourself, if genetics is your work or part of your own story

Martin B. gave them to his wife: “These earrings were highly appreciated by my wife, who is an immuno-geneticist.” Vandenabeele T. received a pair as a Christmas present: “As a doctor, it’s pleasant to incorporate my love for science into the jewelry I wear.”

How Accurately DNA Is Copied

Before a cell divides, it copies its whole genome, about 6 billion letters in a human cell. The copying enzyme, DNA polymerase, picks the wrong letter roughly once in every 100,000. It checks its own work as it goes and removes most of those errors, and a separate repair system catches most of what still slips through. The result is about one mistake in every billion letters copied, only a handful of new changes in each new cell. That accuracy is part of what lets a single fertilised egg become a body of tens of trillions of cells.

FAQ

How big are they, and how do they fasten?

Each helix measures 20 mm (about 0.8 inches), not counting the hook, close to the size of a 10-euro-cent coin. The helix hangs as a drop from a sterling silver leverback hook, which has a hinged back that clicks shut behind the earlobe, so the earring stays in place. They are light and comfortable to wear. 925 sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic, sold as a pair.

Is there a gold pair, or a matching necklace?

Yes. The same DNA earrings come in 18K gold vermeil, also 20 mm, on gold vermeil leverback hooks. Choose the finish she already wears: the design is identical in both. For a set, the vertical DNA necklace has a 20 mm pendant in both finishes. If she prefers hoops, there are DNA earring hoops as well.

Is shipping free, and what if she'd prefer something else?

Yes. DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. The pair comes in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If they aren't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.

Why did DNA repair win a Nobel Prize?

In the early 1970s, most scientists thought DNA was extremely stable. Tomas Lindahl had doubts. As a postdoc at Princeton he had worked with RNA, which broke down quickly whenever he heated it. Back in Stockholm, at Karolinska Institutet, he showed that DNA decays too: thousands of damaged spots in every cell, every day. He then found an enzyme that cuts out damaged bases, the first step of a repair pathway cells run continuously. Lindahl shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Paul Modrich and Aziz Sancar.
