DNA earrings | 18K gold vermeil

If she is the kind of scientist who brings her work home, to the dinner table and into every story she tells, these DNA earrings in gold vermeil are for her. A small double helix at each ear, and a gift that tells her you have been listening.

Who It's For

  • a daughter studying pharmacy, biology or medicine
  • a wife or partner in genetics or molecular biology
  • your mother, for her birthday
  • a colleague at the institute, when flowers feel too ordinary
  • someone who already wears a gold DNA necklace, to make a set
  • yourself, if DNA is your field or part of your own story

Natascha W. gave the silver pair as a present: “These earrings are even prettier than they look in the pictures and perfectly match the description.” Jessica B. added the silver pair to her collection: “I love those earrings. It completes my purchases of the DNA necklace and the DNA ring.”

How Much Information DNA Holds

DNA stores information in four chemical letters: A, C, G and T. With four options, each letter carries two bits, the same unit a computer counts in. One copy of the human genome runs to about 3 billion letters. As raw data that is roughly 750 megabytes, a little more than a CD holds. A typical cell nucleus holds two copies, one from each parent: about 1.5 gigabytes in a space far too small to see with the naked eye.

FAQ

How big are they, and how do they fasten?

Each helix measures 20 mm (about 0.8 inches), not counting the hook, about the diameter of a 10-euro-cent coin or a US penny. It hangs as a drop from a gold vermeil leverback hook, whose hinged back clicks shut behind the earlobe. The pair is 18K gold vermeil: 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. To keep the gold bright, wipe them with a soft cloth, store them dry and take them off before swimming.

Is there a silver pair, or a matching necklace?

Yes. The same DNA earrings come in sterling silver, also 20 mm, on silver leverback hooks. Choose the finish she already wears: the design is the same in both. For a set, the vertical DNA necklace in gold vermeil has a 20 mm pendant, and the horizontal one is 30 mm wide. If she prefers hoops, the DNA earring hoops come in gold vermeil too.

Will they arrive in time, and what if she'd prefer something else?

DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. The pair comes in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If they aren't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies to unworn earrings.

Can DNA store digital files?

Yes, though it is still slow and costly. In 2017, Yaniv Erlich and Dina Zielinski at Columbia University and the New York Genome Center wrote six files into synthetic DNA. Among them were a full computer operating system, the Lumière brothers' 1895 film of a train arriving at La Ciotat, and Claude Shannon's 1948 paper that founded information theory. When they read the DNA back, every file came out without a single error. At the density they reached, one gram of DNA could hold 215 petabytes.
