DNA necklace V | 18K gold vermeil
For a woman in biology, DNA is part of her work. For everyone else, it is family, the thread that runs from parents to children. This small vertical DNA necklace in gold vermeil carries both meanings and sits easily with the jewelry she already wears. Give it to a daughter finishing her biomedical degree or a friend in genetics.
Who It's For
- a daughter graduating in biomedical science, biology or genetics
- a friend who works in a genetics or forensics lab, for her birthday
- a wife or partner who has spent years in research
- a granddaughter heading off to study science, for Christmas
- someone who already has the gold DNA earrings or the horizontal necklace, to add to the set
- yourself, as a small gold vermeil piece for the lab or the office
Sean K. gave the silver version to his daughter: “Bought as a present for my BIOMED studying daughter. She loved it.” Elizabeth G. bought this gold one for herself: “Unusual pendant that goes beautifully with other pieces in the collection.”
How Long DNA Lasts
DNA starts to break down after death, but slowly enough that it can still be read from bones tens of thousands of years old. In 2010, a team led by Svante Pääbo published the first Neanderthal genome. It showed that Neanderthals and our ancestors had children together: in people of European or Asian descent, about 1 to 4 per cent of the genome comes from Neanderthals. Pääbo received the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the genomes of extinct human relatives. That same year, researchers read DNA about 2 million years old from sediments in northern Greenland, from a time when mastodons lived there among forests.

FAQ
How small is it, and how long is the chain?
The pendant is 20 mm tall (about 0.8 inch), close to the size of a 10-euro-cent coin or a US penny. It hangs from a single loop on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) gold vermeil chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. Extra chains of 40, 42, 45 or 50 cm with extender, or 80 cm without, can be added in gold vermeil or silver. The pendant has 2.5 microns of 18K gold over sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Take it off to swim or shower.
Is there a silver version, a larger one, or matching earrings?
Yes. This vertical design also comes in sterling silver at the same 20 mm. Choose the finish she already wears: the design is the same in both. For a larger piece, the horizontal DNA necklace is 30 mm wide and hangs from both ends, in gold vermeil, silver or two-tone. For a set, the DNA earrings in gold vermeil measure 20 mm each, not counting the hook.
How quickly does it arrive, and can it be returned?
DHL Express delivers it free worldwide in 1-5 business days, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It comes in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.
Who invented DNA fingerprinting?
Alec Jeffreys, a geneticist at the University of Leicester. At 9.05 on the morning of 10 September 1984 he looked at an X-ray film of DNA from a technician's family and saw patterns that differed from person to person yet showed family links. The first real use came in 1985. UK immigration officials doubted that a boy arriving from Ghana was his mother's son. DNA tests proved he was, the Home Office dropped the case, and he was allowed to stay.
