What DNA Stores
DNA stores information in the order of its bases. Within a gene, the bases are read three at a time, each triplet naming the next amino acid in a protein, and with few exceptions that same code is shared by all of life. The human genome holds about 20,000 protein-coding genes, yet the parts that code for protein make up only about 1 to 2 per cent of it. Part of the rest controls when and where genes are switched on. Any two people share about 99.6 per cent of their DNA sequence, and the small remainder is part of what makes each person different.

How big is the pendant, and what is gold vermeil?
The pendant is 30 mm wide (about 1.2 inches), a little wider than a 2-euro coin or a US quarter. It is 18K gold vermeil: a 2.5 micron layer of 18K gold over solid sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. It hangs from both ends on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) gold vermeil chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender, so it sits at the collarbone or just below. To keep the gold bright, wipe it with a soft cloth, store it dry and take it off before swimming.
Gold, silver or two-tone: which DNA necklace should I choose?
The horizontal DNA necklace is the same 30 mm design in all three: gold vermeil, sterling silver, or two-tone with one strand in each metal. Choose the finish the recipient already wears. For a smaller piece, the vertical DNA necklace is 20 mm and also comes in gold vermeil, and there are DNA earrings in gold vermeil to match.

When was a human genome first read from end to end?
Only in 2022. The Human Genome Project was declared complete in 2003, but about 8 per cent of the sequence, mostly long repetitive stretches, could not yet be read. The Telomere-to-Telomere consortium closed those gaps and published the first complete human genome in Science in 2022: about 3.05 billion base pairs across all 22 autosomes and the X, read end to end. The cell line they used carries no Y chromosome, and a complete Y followed in 2023.
