Caffeine necklace | sterling silver

Some friendships run on coffee: the first cup of the day together, or the long talk over a second one. A caffeine molecule necklace is a small way to honour that. Give it to the friend who never skips her morning coffee, or to the partner you share your daily coffee break with.

Who It's For

  • a friend who can't start her day before the first coffee, for her birthday or for Christmas
  • a daughter who asked for it, for her birthday or her graduation
  • your wife or partner, if a coffee together is the pause in your busy days
  • a chemist or scientist friend who loves her coffee as much as her work
  • a colleague who kept the lab or the office going on coffee, when she moves on
  • yourself, if coffee is part of your day and you don't mind people asking what you're wearing

Alexandra J. gave the gold vermeil version as a gift: “The receiver of the gift, a coffee addict, enjoyed the jewelry enormously.” Amy P. bought this silver one for herself: “I love coffee and this necklace, great quality, I get a lot of compliments”.

How Caffeine Keeps You Awake

While you are awake, a molecule called adenosine slowly builds up in the brain, and it is one of the signals that make you feel sleepy. Caffeine's double ring resembles the adenine part of adenosine, closely enough to sit in its receptors, mainly A1 and A2A, without switching them on. Caffeine gives you no energy of its own. It hides the signal that you are tired until your body clears the caffeine over several hours. Plants make it for their own reasons. At high doses it is toxic to many insects, yet in coffee and citrus nectar it sharpens honeybees' memory: bees that drank it were three times as likely to remember the flower's scent a day later.

FAQ

How big is the pendant, and how does it sit?

The pendant measures 25 mm (about 1 inch), close to the size of a 2-euro coin and a little larger than a US quarter. It hangs from a single loop and sits below the collarbone, on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) sterling silver chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. Extra chains of 40, 42, 45 or 50 cm with extender, or 80 cm without, can be added on this page in silver or gold vermeil. The pendant is 925 sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic.

Is there a gold version, or matching earrings?

Yes. The same 25 mm caffeine pendant comes in 18K gold vermeil (18K gold over sterling silver) on a gold vermeil chain. Choose the finish she already wears. The molecule is the same in both, and only the metal changes. To make a set, there are caffeine earrings in silver or gold vermeil (a 14 mm molecule on 17.5 mm hoops), caffeine studs in silver (11 x 14 mm) and a caffeine ring in silver, US sizes 5 to 9.

When will it arrive, and can it be returned?

DHL Express delivers it free worldwide in 1-5 business days, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.

Who discovered caffeine?

A young chemist, with a nudge from Goethe. In 1819 Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, then 25, showed the poet how a plant extract could widen a cat's pupil. Goethe was impressed and handed him a box of coffee beans that a Greek had sent him, suggesting he use them in his research. Within months Runge had isolated caffeine from them, and he published the work in 1820. Chemists in Paris found it independently soon after.
