Dopamine studs | sterling silver

Some gifts sit in a drawer. These dopamine earrings are small enough to wear every day, to the lab, a lecture or dinner, and say something about the person wearing them: that she knows, or loves, how the brain works. A gift for a daughter in biology or a woman in science.

Who It's For

  • a scientist in your life, as a present
  • a daughter who is a biologist
  • a granddaughter, when you want to give her something special
  • a girlfriend for her birthday, or a fiancée
  • yourself, as a little pair to wear every day

Elizabeth L. bought a pair as a gift: “Very nice. Great quality”. Jaime S. bought a pair to keep: “Love these adorable little studs so much!!”

Dopamine as a Hormone

Dopamine also works as a hormone. Nerve cells in the hypothalamus, at the base of the brain, release it into tiny blood vessels that run straight down to the pituitary gland. There it holds back prolactin, the hormone named for its role in making milk. The other hormones from the front of the pituitary are mainly switched on by signals from the hypothalamus. Cut the pituitary stalk and those hormones fall, while prolactin rises. Its control is mostly a brake, and dopamine is the main one.

FAQ

How big are the studs, and how do they stay in?

Each stud measures 15 mm (about 0.6 inches), a little smaller than a 1-cent euro coin and smaller than a US dime, so it sits close to the earlobe. A sterling silver post goes through the ear, and an ear nut slides on behind it. Our 925 sterling silver is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Wipe the studs with a soft cloth to keep them bright, and store them dry in their box.

Is there a gold pair, or a matching necklace?

Yes. The same 15 mm dopamine studs come in 18K gold vermeil, which is 2.5 microns of 18K gold over sterling silver. Choose the finish the recipient already wears. The design is the same in both. For a set, the dopamine necklace comes in silver and in gold vermeil, horizontal or vertical, with a 20 mm pendant. There are also a dopamine ring and a dopamine bracelet, both in silver.

Will they arrive in time, and what if they aren't right?

DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. They arrive in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If they aren't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies to unworn earrings.

What do mussels have to do with dopamine?

Their glue. In 1981 J. H. Waite and M. L. Tanzer reported in Science that a protein from the mussel's foot, which they proposed helps its threads hold on to rock, is rich in DOPA, the molecule the body turns into dopamine. In 2007 a Northwestern University team led by Phillip Messersmith tried dopamine itself, which is not part of the mussel's glue. Dissolved in water at the pH of seawater, it formed a thin, clinging film, polydopamine, on all 25 materials they tested, Teflon included.
