Brain necklace | sterling silver
A brain necklace says what she works on, or what she is studying for, without a word of explanation. It is a gift for the woman in your life who thinks about brains for a living, and small enough to wear every day, in the lecture hall, the lab or the clinic.
Who It's For
- a daughter studying neuroscience or neuropsychology, for a birthday or her graduation
- a daughter starting out in neurosurgery, as a resident or physician assistant
- a wife or partner in neuroscience, for her doctoral exam or an anniversary
- a newly qualified psychologist
- a friend who loves the brain, for a milestone birthday
- yourself, to wear every day
If your own brain has a story to tell, this is a piece to keep close.
Leone F. gave it to her daughter, who is studying to be a neuropsychologist: “I had searched for years to find the right one and this is the nicest one I have ever seen.” Marie B. bought her own: “I ordered the silver brain necklace for myself and it's a really beautiful and special piece of jewellery.”
The Science Behind the Brain
From above, the brain is all folds. The ridges are called gyri and the grooves sulci, and together they make up the surface of the cerebral cortex, the brain's outer layer. The cortex is a sheet only about 2.5 mm thick on average. Unfolded, each half would cover roughly 0.1 square metres, about one and a half sheets of A4 paper, and most of it lies hidden inside the grooves. Across each half runs the central sulcus. The strip of cortex in front of it sends the commands that move the body, and the strip behind it receives touch and other sensations from the body.

FAQ
How big is it, and how does it sit?
The pendant measures 18 mm (0.7 inches), about the size of a US dime and smaller than a 2-euro coin. It hangs upright from a small loop at the top on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) sterling silver chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender, and sits around the collarbone. It is 925 sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Silver darkens with time in the air, and a polishing cloth brings back the shine.
Is there a gold version, or matching earrings?
Yes. The same brain necklace comes in 18K gold vermeil, also 18 mm. Choose the finish the recipient already wears: the design is the same in both. For a matching set, the brain studs are a smaller version in sterling silver, 12 by 9 mm. If she would rather wear the brain cut down the middle, there is a sagittal brain necklace in silver and gold vermeil.
Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?
DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.
Who drew the famous map of the body on the brain?
In Montreal from the late 1920s, the neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield operated on people with epilepsy while they were awake. He touched the exposed cortex with a mild electrical current and noted what each patient felt or moved. With Edwin Boldrey he laid the results out as a map of the body along the strips on either side of the central sulcus, published in 1937. The little man that turned the map into a picture, the homunculus, was drawn by Hortense Cantlie, a Montreal medical illustrator.
