Chlorophyll necklace | 18K gold vermeil

Every leaf is green because of chlorophyll, the molecule that turns sunlight into the energy almost every food chain runs on. This chlorophyll necklace in 18K gold vermeil is for the plant biologist, botanist or photosynthesis researcher who wants a quiet nod to her research, or for anyone who would like to give her one.

The Chemistry of Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll a has two parts. A flat ring holds a magnesium ion at its centre and absorbs red and blue light. A long hydrocarbon tail called phytol anchors the molecule in the membranes inside the chloroplast. There, hundreds of chlorophylls sit bound to proteins in light-harvesting antennae. When one absorbs a photon, the energy hops from molecule to molecule until it reaches a reaction centre, where a special pair of chlorophylls gives up an electron. That handover is the first step in storing light as chemical energy, and it all happens in less than a billionth of a second.

Who It's For

  • a plant biologist or botanist who wants to wear her field
  • a PhD student in plant science, for her defence or graduation
  • a keen gardener who loves the science behind it
  • someone who already wears the chlorophyll necklace in silver and wants the gold
  • yourself, if gold is what you wear every day

From a review of the silver version. Diana S.: “This is a beautiful and delicate piece. I love the shape and the way I can give a subtle nod to my research!”

FAQ

How big is the pendant, and what chain comes with it?

The pendant is 45 mm wide (about 1.8 inches), nearly twice the width of a US quarter, and hangs horizontally with a loop at each end. It comes on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) gold vermeil chain with a lobster clasp and a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. 18K gold vermeil means 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. To keep the gold bright, wipe it with a soft cloth and store it dry in its box.

Is there a silver version?

Yes. The chlorophyll necklace also comes in sterling silver, at the same 45 mm. Choose the finish she already wears: the design is the same in both.

Is delivery free, and what if it isn't right?

Yes. DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.

Who first made chlorophyll in the lab?

Robert Burns Woodward and his team at Harvard. In 1960 they reported the first total synthesis of chlorophyll a, building the molecule step by step from simple starting materials. Richard Willstätter had worked out much of its composition decades earlier, and Hans Fischer had worked out most of its structure by 1940. Woodward received the 1965 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in organic synthesis.
