DNA ring (engraved) | sterling silver
The bases pair with such precision that the helix unwinds, and each strand becomes the template for a new strand. A molecule that builds itself out of itself. Now engraved into silver to wear daily.
The Science Behind DNA
DNA is a double helix of two antiparallel strands joined by base pairing: adenine to thymine, guanine to cytosine. The 3.4 nanometre distance between base pairs determines the helix pitch (10.5 base pairs per turn, 3.4 nm per turn, 2 nm diameter). The four nucleotide bases encode all genetic information through a three-letter code (codons). Each codon specifies one of twenty amino acids. The genetic code was cracked between 1961-1966 by Nirenberg, Khorana, and Holley (1968 Nobel Prize). Remarkably, the same codon means the same amino acid across bacteria, plants, flies, and humans. This near-universality has been conserved for over 3.5 billion years, reflecting how catastrophic a change would be for any organism carrying it.

FAQ
Why does the double helix structure matter?
The double helix structure immediately suggested the mechanism for replication. Each strand could serve as a template for a new strand, with base pairing rules ensuring accuracy. The structure contained the code to its own duplication. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins won the 1962 Nobel Prize (Franklin had died in 1958 and could not be nominated posthumously).
Is this a gift for someone specific?
Yes. DNA rings are often ordered by geneticists, molecular biologists, families celebrating genetic heritage, or anyone who wants to carry the structure that carries you.
What size and material? How do I determine my ring size?
925 polished sterling silver ring with an engraved DNA helix, available in US sizes 5-9. Nickel-free and hypoallergenic. To determine your ring size, wrap a strip of paper around the base of your finger (below the knuckle) and mark where it overlaps. Measure the length in millimetres and reference a ring-size conversion chart, or contact us for guidance. All import duties and taxes are covered by Science Jewelry 18:24.
What if the fit isn't right?
All jewelry is covered by a 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy. If the size or fit doesn't work, we will help you find the right option with a free exchange.
