GLP-1 necklace | sterling silver

GLP-1 is the gut hormone behind the newest diabetes and obesity medicines, a peptide that spent decades in specialist journals before it became a household name. A GLP-1 necklace suits the endocrinologist, the diabetes nurse or the scientist who was working on it long before anyone else had heard the name.

Who It's For

  • an endocrinologist finishing her fellowship, or opening her own clinic
  • a diabetes nurse or dietitian who has guided patients through their first injection
  • a pharmacologist or peptide chemist celebrating a paper, a patent or a new role
  • a PhD student in metabolism on the day of her defence
  • yourself, if GLP-1 medicine has been part of your own story

How GLP-1 Works

GLP-1, short for glucagon-like peptide-1, is released by endocrine cells in the lining of the gut after a meal. It tells the pancreas to release insulin, but only while blood sugar is raised. It also slows the emptying of the stomach and helps signal fullness. Its weakness is speed. An enzyme called DPP-4 clips two amino acids off its front end within minutes, and the hormone stops working. Every GLP-1 medicine since has tried to solve that, with a version the enzyme cannot cut so quickly.

FAQ

How big is the GLP-1 necklace and how does it sit?

The pendant is 24 mm long, about 0.9 inches, roughly the width of a US quarter (24.26 mm). It hangs from a small ring on a 45 cm (17.7 in) sterling silver chain with a 5 cm (2 in) extender, so it sits just below the collarbone and can be worn a little higher or lower. Our 925 sterling silver is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. A soft cloth brings back the shine if it dulls over time.

Which version should I choose?

The GLP-1 necklace comes in sterling silver and in 18K gold vermeil, both with a 24 mm pendant on a 45 cm chain with a 5 cm extender. Choose the finish the recipient already wears. The design and the size are the same in both finishes.

Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?

Shipping is free worldwide with DHL Express and takes 1-5 business days, with import duties and taxes covered, so nothing extra is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box with a festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy covers it.

Who discovered the active form of GLP-1?

Svetlana Mojsov, a peptide chemist working with Joel Habener's group at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1987 she and her colleagues showed that a shortened form, GLP-1(7-37), strongly triggered insulin release in the pancreas, the step that made a medicine possible. A Copenhagen team led by Jens Juul Holst reported a closely related form the same year. For decades her part was largely left out of the story. In 2024 she shared the Lasker Award with Habener and Lotte Bjerre Knudsen of Novo Nordisk.
