GLP-1 necklace | gold vermeil

GLP-1 is a small hormone, about thirty amino acids long, and it has changed how two of the most common chronic conditions are treated. Give a gold vermeil GLP-1 necklace to someone whose work is part of that change: the obesity medicine doctor, the pharmacist, or the researcher who has spent years on this one peptide.

Who It's For

  • a doctor in diabetes or obesity medicine starting a new post
  • a metabolism researcher marking a first grant, a big paper or a promotion
  • a pharmacist or diabetes educator moving on to a new team
  • a colleague retiring after a career in endocrinology

The Science Behind GLP-1 Medicines

The first GLP-1 medicine did not come from a human hormone at all. In 1992 John Eng, an endocrinologist at the Bronx VA hospital in New York, isolated exendin-4 from Gila monster venom, a peptide that acts on the same receptor as GLP-1 but lasts far longer in the body. As exenatide, it was approved in 2005 for type 2 diabetes. Chemists at Novo Nordisk took another route and modified human GLP-1 itself, adding a fatty side chain that lets it bind to albumin, the most abundant protein in blood plasma. That gave liraglutide, taken once a day, and later semaglutide, taken once a week.

FAQ

How big is the GLP-1 necklace and how does it sit?

The pendant is 24 mm long, about 0.9 inches, roughly the width of a US quarter (24.26 mm). It hangs from a small ring on a 45 cm (17.7 in) gold vermeil chain with a 5 cm (2 in) extender, so it sits just below the collarbone and can be worn a little higher or lower. Gold vermeil here means 2.5 microns of 18K gold over a solid sterling silver core, nickel-free and hypoallergenic.

Which version should I choose?

The GLP-1 necklace comes in 18K gold vermeil and in sterling silver, both with a 24 mm pendant on a 45 cm chain with a 5 cm extender. Choose the finish the recipient already wears. The design and the size are the same in both finishes.

Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?

Shipping is free worldwide with DHL Express and takes 1-5 business days, with import duties and taxes covered, so nothing extra is due at the door. It arrives in a ready-to-gift jewelry box with a festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy covers it.

Where was GLP-1 first found?

Its first trace turned up in a fish. In 1982 Joel Habener's lab at Massachusetts General Hospital read the glucagon gene of the anglerfish and found more than glucagon in it: right beside it sat a second sequence that looked very like glucagon. When the same gene was read in mammals, it held two glucagon-like peptides, and one of them became GLP-1. Working out which form of it the body uses took the rest of the decade.
