Brain necklace | 18K gold vermeil
One customer gave this gold brain necklace as a present and called it a no-brainer, pun intended. It suits a woman whose work is the brain and the mind, in psychology, neuroscience, neurology or neurosurgery, and it marks a graduation or a milestone birthday with something to wear long after the day itself.
Who It's For
- a friend graduating, or turning fifty
- a daughter studying neuropsychology, or starting out in neurosurgery
- a wife or partner in neuroscience, for her doctoral exam
- a psychologist who has just qualified
- yourself, if gold is what you wear every day
And if your own brain has been through something, a surgery or a long recovery, it is a piece to wear for what you came through.
From reviews of the silver version: A K. bought it for a newly qualified psychologist and found it “just enough to sit nicely, not at all pulling.” Onur D.: “I gave it to my wife for a doctoral exam and she was very happy about it, smiling all day.”
How the Brain Gets Its Folds
For the first half of pregnancy, the surface of the growing brain is almost smooth. Folding begins around the 20th week. On fetal MRI the central sulcus appears at about 24 to 25 weeks, and by about 33 weeks all the main grooves are in place. The folds go on developing after birth, until a child is about a year and a half old. Why fold at all? The outer layer, the cortex, expands faster than the tissue beneath it, and it buckles. In 2016 a Harvard-led team showed this with a gel copy of a smooth fetal brain, coated in a thin layer that swelled in a solvent. Within minutes it had folded into a pattern similar to a real brain.

FAQ
How big is it, and will the gold last?
The pendant measures 18 mm (0.7 inches), about the size of a US dime and smaller than a 2-euro coin. It hangs upright from a small loop on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) gold vermeil chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender, and sits around the collarbone. The finish is 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver. Wipe it with a soft cloth, store it dry and take it off before swimming.
Is there a silver version, or matching earrings?
Yes. The same brain necklace comes in sterling silver, also 18 mm. Choose the finish the recipient already wears: the design is the same in both. The brain studs, a smaller version at 12 by 9 mm, come only in sterling silver, so for a set in one metal, pair them with the silver necklace. If she would rather wear the brain cut down the middle, there is a sagittal brain necklace in gold vermeil and silver.
Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?
It ships free worldwide with DHL Express and arrives in 1-5 business days. We pay the import duties and taxes, so there is nothing to pay on delivery. It comes in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.
Who was Tan, the patient behind Broca's area?
In April 1861 the Paris surgeon Paul Broca saw a hospital patient who for about 21 years had said little more than one syllable, “tan”, and was known as Tan. He died within a week. Broca found a lesion in the left frontal lobe and argued that this region is needed to produce speech. It is still called Broca's area. For 150 years he was known only as Tan or Monsieur Leborgne, until the historian Cezary Domanski traced his records in 2013: Louis Victor Leborgne, born in 1809, a maker of the wooden forms used by shoemakers.
