Petri dish necklace | 18K gold vermeil
One customer gave this petri dish necklace to a daughter who works as a biologist, and she loved it. In 18K gold vermeil, it suits a woman who spends her days with cultures and plates, and who reaches for gold when she gets dressed.
Who It's For
- a daughter who works as a biologist
- a granddaughter who asked for one, as a graduation gift
- a wife or partner who works in a lab
- a friend doing a PhD in antibiotics research
- yourself, if you are a microbiologist who wears gold
Dror N. on the gold version: “Got it very fast. Wife loved it”. Brenda M. on the silver one: “Jewellery is good quality and a perfect size.”
How a Plate Tests Bacteria Against Antibiotics
A Petri dish is also one of the ways labs find out which antibiotics will work against an infection. A microbiologist spreads bacteria evenly over the agar and lays small paper discs on top, each soaked in a different antibiotic. Over 16 to 18 hours at about 35 °C, the drug seeps out into the agar. The bacteria grow as a lawn, except around each disc where the drug is concentrated enough to stop them, which leaves a clear circle. The diameter of that zone is measured to the nearest millimetre and checked against published tables to call the bacteria susceptible or resistant, with a middle category in between. Alfred Bauer, William Kirby and colleagues standardised the method in 1966.

FAQ
How big is the pendant, and will the gold last?
The pendant is 20 mm across (about 0.8 inch), close to a 10-euro-cent coin or a US penny. It hangs from a small loop on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) gold vermeil chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. Extra chains of 40, 42, 45 or 50 cm with extender, or 80 cm, are sold on this page. The finish is 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver. Wipe it with a soft cloth, store it dry and take it off before swimming.
Is there a silver version, or matching earrings?
Yes. The same 20 mm pendant comes in sterling silver. Choose the finish the recipient already wears. The petri dish earrings (20 mm each, not counting the hook, on leverbacks) and the bracelet with a 20 mm charm come only in sterling silver, so for a set in one metal, pair them with the silver necklace.
Will it arrive in time, and what if it isn't right?
It ships free worldwide with DHL Express and arrives in 1-5 business days. We pay the import duties and taxes, so there is nothing to pay on delivery. It comes in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If it isn't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies.
Who first used agar in the lab?
Fanny Hesse, in 1881. She worked with her husband Walther, a doctor studying microbes in the air, and painted his bacterial colonies in watercolour. That summer his gelatin kept melting in the heat. She had used agar for years to set fruit jellies that stayed firm in hot weather, and suggested he try it. It worked, and Robert Koch's lab took it up. In 1939 two American authors proposed calling plain agar “Frau Hesse's medium”.
