The Science Behind the Uterus
The uterus is a pear-shaped muscular organ about 8 cm long. Its lining, the endometrium, does something no other adult tissue does: with each period it breaks down, bleeds and heals again without leaving a scar. Why are the fallopian tubes named after a person?
They carry the name of Gabriele Falloppio, professor of anatomy and surgery at Padua. In his Observationes anatomicae of 1561 he gave the first detailed description of the tubes and called each one a tuba, Latin for trumpet, because its fringed, flaring end reminded him of one. He died in Padua the following year, at about 39, and the tubes have carried his name ever since.
