Why Propofol Is White
Propofol is a small molecule: a ring of six carbon atoms carrying one oxygen-hydrogen group, flanked by two isopropyl groups. Hence its chemical name, 2,6-diisopropylphenol. It barely dissolves in water, so it cannot be given as a plain solution. Instead it is carried in tiny droplets of soybean oil, held in water by egg lecithin, an oil-in-water emulsion like milk. That is why it looks like milk in the syringe. In the standard formulation, propofol itself makes up only 1 per cent. In the brain it is thought to work by strengthening the effect of GABA, the main signal nerve cells use to quieten one another, at its GABA-A receptors.

How big is the pendant, and will the gold last?
The pendant measures 22 mm (about 0.9 inch), slightly smaller than a 2-euro coin (25.75 mm) or a US quarter (24.26 mm). It hangs below the collarbone on a 45 cm (17.7 inch) gold vermeil chain with a 5 cm (2 inch) extender. Extra chains of 40, 42, 45 or 50 cm with extender, or 80 cm, are sold on this page. The finish is 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Wipe it with a soft cloth and take it off before swimming.
Is there a silver version, or a combined piece?
Yes. The pendant also comes in sterling silver, at the same 22 mm. Choose the finish she already wears. The design is the same in both. Who discovered propofol?
A team at ICI, led by a vet. John Glen trained as a vet and veterinary anaesthetist in Glasgow, then joined ICI in 1972 to look for a better intravenous anaesthetic. In 1973 his tests in mice showed what 2,6-diisopropylphenol could do. Human trials began in 1977 but were stopped around 1980 after anaphylactoid reactions, put down to the castor oil solvent, not the drug. ICI moved it into a soybean oil emulsion, approved in the UK in 1986. In 2018 Glen received a Lasker Award for its discovery and development.
