The Anatomy of the Kidney
Each kidney contains approximately one million nephrons the functional filtration units. Blood enters via the renal artery, which branches progressively until reaching the glomerulus, where high hydrostatic pressure forces plasma across the glomerular filtration membrane. The filtrate passes through the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule, and collecting duct, each segment reabsorbing specific solutes and water under hormonal control (aldosterone, ADH, PTH). The kidney's outer cortex contains the glomeruli and convoluted tubules; the inner medulla contains the loops of Henle and collecting ducts. This countercurrent concentration mechanism allows the kidney to produce urine up to four times more concentrated than plasma.
