Mitochondrion necklace | sterling silver

The power plant of the cell — and the only organelle with its own genome, a remnant of an ancient bacterial endosymbiosis.

The Science of the Mitochondrion

Mitochondria are double-membrane organelles that produce the majority of cellular ATP via oxidative phosphorylation. The inner membrane is folded into cristae to maximise the surface area available for the electron transport chain — four protein complexes that transfer electrons from NADH and FADH2 to oxygen, driving the synthesis of ATP by ATP synthase. Mitochondria retain a circular genome of 16,569 base pairs encoding 13 proteins, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs — molecular evidence of their origin as endosymbiotic alpha-proteobacteria, as proposed by Lynn Margulis in 1967. They also regulate calcium signalling, apoptosis, and reactive oxygen species production.

FAQ

Q: Why does mitochondrion have its own DNA?

A: Because it is the remnant of an ancient bacterium, swallowed by a larger cell billions of years ago. Endosymbiotic theory – mitochondria are symbiotic bacteria that became organelles.

Q: What is the chain and material?

A: Sterling silver, 45cm / 18 inches. Shipped globally via DHL Express in about a week.

Q: Is the double membrane visible on the pendant?

A: Yes. The design shows the characteristic folded inner membrane (cristae) where ATP synthesis happens.

Q: Who wears mitochondrion jewelry?

A: Biochemists, cell biologists, bioenergetics researchers, anyone who appreciates that we are walking colonies of ancient bacteria.
