Adenine-thymine earrings | 18K gold vermeil

Adenine and thymine are one of the two base pairs that hold the DNA double helix together. These adenine-thymine earrings in 18K gold vermeil split the pair between two ears, adenine on one and thymine on the other. Give them to a molecular biologist, a biology student or a friend who loves DNA, or keep them for yourself.

Who It's For

  • a molecular biologist or geneticist, for her birthday or a new position
  • a biology or biochemistry student, when her exams are behind her
  • a dermatologist or skin cancer researcher, who knows what sunlight does to thymine
  • someone who already wears the cytosine-guanine earrings in gold, to complete the code
  • yourself, if gold is what you wear every day

From a review of the silver version. Ameae W.: “For the scientist who has everything!”

What Sunlight Does to Thymine

When ultraviolet light hits DNA, two thymines that sit next to each other on the same strand can fuse into one unit, called a thymine dimer. The fused pair puts a kink in the helix, and the cell can no longer copy that stretch correctly. Skin cells deal with thousands of these lesions after a day in strong sun. A repair system called nucleotide excision repair cuts out the damaged piece and fills the gap using the other strand as a template. People with the inherited condition xeroderma pigmentosum lack parts of this system, and their risk of skin cancer is many times higher.

FAQ

How big are they, and how do the hoops close?

Each molecule measures 12 mm (about half an inch), not counting the hoop, smaller than a 1-cent euro coin or a US dime. They hang just below the earlobe from thin 17.5 mm gold vermeil hoops. Each hoop has a small hinged section that opens, passes through the piercing and clicks shut. It can take some practice the first time, so try them once at home before a day out. 18K gold vermeil means 2.5 microns of 18K gold over solid sterling silver, nickel-free and hypoallergenic.

Is there a silver pair, or a matching set?

Yes. The adenine-thymine earrings also come in sterling silver, with the same 12 mm molecules on 17.5 mm hoops. Choose the finish she already wears: the design is the same in both. To complete the code, the cytosine-guanine earrings carry the other base pair, with 13 mm molecules on the same hoops, in gold vermeil and in sterling silver.

Is delivery free, and what if they aren't right?

Yes. DHL Express delivers free in 1-5 business days worldwide, and we pay the import duties and taxes, so nothing is due at the door. They arrive in a ready-to-gift jewelry box and festive envelope. If they aren't right, our 30-day “Love It or Return It” policy applies to unworn earrings.

Can adenine form without life?

Yes, and that surprised chemists. In 1960 the Catalan biochemist Joan Oró, working in Houston, heated a concentrated solution of ammonium cyanide and found adenine among the products. Five molecules of hydrogen cyanide hold exactly the atoms of one adenine. His result suggested that one of the building blocks of DNA could have formed on the early Earth from simple chemicals, before there was any life to make it. Oró later worked on NASA missions, including the Viking landers sent to Mars.
